Somewhere Desperately Nowhere: Collider, by All Under Heaven

Negli ultimi periodi, Temtö ha deciso di occuparsi anche di artisti internazionali: questa è la nostra seconda recensione di un artista straniero (leggi qui la prima, opera del nostro Silvestro Perri).

E il nostro soggetto sono loro, gli All Under Heaven, direttamente da Freehold, New Jersey! Al loro primo EP con Collider (edito da Sunday Drive Records/Shore Dive Records) , il giovane trio americano dà prova di grande abilità musicale, destreggiandosi in soli quattro pezzi in quello strano spazio sonoro compreso/compresso tra shoegaze, grunge e una certa softness un pò aliena al genere, ma sicuramente d’impatto. Ma andiamo ai pezzi.

Desperately Seeking Answers apre il disco senza convenevoli: la prima impressione è quella di un gruppo shoegaze/alternative anni ‘90, ma addolcito da un gusto per la melodia e l’orecchiabilità. Il cantato in particolare, per quanto stacchi da quanto ci si potrebbe aspettare, si combina perfettamente colla strumentale, e cattura immediatamente.

Cerulean invece, alza un pò l’asticella dell’aggressività, specialmente nei riff di chitarra: anche il cantato, pur mantenendosi pulito e melodico, comunica maggiore intensità. Variazione minima della formula, ma interessante.

Cement Shoes è il mio pezzo preferito: strofe nel più sincero stile shoegaze, e poi il ritornello, un crescendo che chiude in un riff semplice, ma estremamente d’effetto. Si possono sentire vaghe tracce di Hum e Red House Painters, specialmente nel senso di sarcastica tristezza che comunica. Riuscitissimo.

Afterthought chiude il lavoro riprendendo un pò Desperately Seeking Answers: uno shoegaze/alternative molto addolcito, che qualcuno potrebbe ricondurre anche ai Ride.

Il risultato finale è sinceramente notevole: per quanto non sia eccessivamente originale, non è troppo derivativo e mostra sia un’ottima abilità tecnica, sia una propria personalità che rende il disco godibile anche non essendo fan di una delle influenze del gruppo (il principale, gli Starflyer 59, che almeno personalmente ricordano i nostri Verdena).

Come ogni esordio, ci sono considerazioni da fare: non sappiamo come evolverà il loro sound, e ci son sicuramente spazio per limare possibili difetti (uno su tutti, una certa omogeneità eccessiva fra i vari pezzi, che su un EP di quattro pezzi può essere gradevole, ma su un LP può diventare un’ostacolo). Un pò d’ingenuità, soprattutto nei testi, ancora si sente.

Tuttavia, sono difetti più che accettabili in un esordio e non possono oscurare un lavoro decisamente solido, che anche se non fa gridare al capolavoro è un must per gli appassionati del genere e per chiunque apprezzi sonorità malinconiche e che ricordano certo alternative degli anni ‘90. Li terremo sott’occhio, aspettando con impazienza l’eventuale primo disco.

Lately, Temtö started to cover international artists: this is our second review of a foreign artist (click here to read the first one, made by our own Silvestro Perri).

And the subject’s them, All Under Heaven, directly from Freehold, New Jersey! With Collider, their sophomore EP (published by Sunday Drive Records/Shore Dive Records), the young American trio shows great musical skills, navigating with just four songs in that weird sonic space delimited by shoegaze, grunge and a certain softness, which is vaguely alien to the genre but surely impactful. But let’s go to the songs.

Desperately Seeking Answers skips the pleasantries: the first impression is that of a shoegaze/grunge/alternative ‘90s band, softened by a taste for melody and catchiness. The singing, even if distant from what could be expected, ties perfectly with the instrumentals, and drags you in immediately.

Cerulean instead raises a bit the bar of aggression, especially guitar-wise: the singing conveys more intensity, even though is still pretty clean and melodic. A minimal variation of the formula, but an interesting one.

Cement Shoes is my personal favorite: the verses are made in the most sincere shoegaze style possible, and then comes the refrain, a crescendo closed by a simple but extremely spectacular riff. Faint traces of Hum and Red House Painters can be heard, especially in the sense of sarcastic sadness it expresses. Extremely accomplished.

Afterthought closes the work by echoing Desperately Seeking Answers: a softened shoegaze/alternative sound, which someone could trace back to bands like Ride.

The end result is sincerely impressive: even though it isn’t excessively original, it isn’t too derivative either, and showcases both good technical skills and a certain personality that makes the EP enjoyable even without being fan of any of the band influences (one of the most prominent being Starflayer 59, which resemble the Italian band Verdena, at least from a personal point of view).

This being their debut, there’s some considerations to do: we don’t know how their sound will evolve, and there’s surely room to iron out a few rough edges (firstly, the songs being all too similar to one another, which is not a big issue with an EP but can become a nuisance in an LP). A certain ingenuity, especially when it comes to lyrics, can still be perceived.

However, these are all acceptable flaws for a debut and do not obfuscate a really solid work, and even though it’s not a masterpiece I think it’s a must for all the die-hard fans of the genre, and really anyone digging melancholic sounds reminiscent of certain ‘90s alternative music. We’ll keep an eye on them, waiting impatiently for their eventual first LP.
